Tim –
These 80/20s are awesome! I’ve been using Martin and D’Addario strings for years on my Martin D-18, but was starting to grow dissatisfied with the guitar. It’s a pre-2012 model, so it has the non-scalloped bracing. I’d tried some of the new scalloped, forward shifted D-18s and was convinced I needed to get one of those to find the sound I was after. My dad had a spare set of your bluegrass gauge 80/20s he didn’t need, so he gave them to me to try. I didn’t expect much from them as I’d never enjoyed 80/20s before, but since they were free I thought I’d try them until I could find a newer D-18 to suit my fancy. The strings were a revelation, and totally revealed the best qualities of my guitar. Since moving to the Mapes 80/20s, I’ve fallen back in love with the guitar more than ever, and can’t imagine ever parting with it. Also, they last an unbelievable amount of time. Normally 80/20s have gone dead on me within a few weeks. I’ve been using these for about 5 months, and only now am I starting to feel the need for a change. Thanks for giving me my guitar back!
